16: I am unable to sign in to my Financial Account. The sign-in process involves multiple pages and security questions. What should I do?
There are many financial sites where usernames and passwords are entered on separate pages, and additional security questions or steps are required. Bank of America, Bank of the West and Vanguard Financial are examples of such Web sites.
These sites make use of “cookies” for security purposes. For ID Vault to work properly with these financial sites, it is necessary to store these cookies in Internet Explorer. (A “cookie” is information that a Web site puts on your computer so that it can remember something about you at a later date.) Many financial sites use cookies to determine whether your individual computer has previously accessed a particular account. If your computer is not storing cookies for your financial institution(s), ID Vault could cause the sign-in process to fail.
To check whether cookies are being stored for an online financial account:
Sign in to the site manually, without using ID Vault, using Internet Explorer. (NOTE: You need to perform these steps in Internet Explorer even if you normally use Firefox.) If you are asked a security question such as your mother’s maiden name or the name of your first pet, then cookies are not being stored properly on your computer for this account.
To modify your Internet Explorer settings so that cookies are properly stored for our financial institution:
- Open Internet Explorer, choose the “Tools” option in the menu, and then select “Internet Options.” (NOTE: You need to perform these steps in Internet Explorer even if you normally use Firefox.)
- Under the Privacy tab, click on the “Sites” button.

- In “Per Site Privacy Actions” window, look for the name of your financial institution’s Web site URL in the “Managed websites” list. If it is not there, your computer is not set to save cookies for this site.
- Add the Web address, or URL, for your financial institution into the “Address of website:” field. Click “Allow.”

- When you click on “Allow,” Windows will add this site to the list of “Managed websites.”

- Click “OK” to close the “Internet Options” window.
- Close Internet Explorer to ensure the changes will take effect. Cookies for this Web site will be stored regardless of your other Internet security settings.
Once you have verified that the cookie settings are correct, log into your account once manually, without using ID Vault, to ensure that the site’s cookies will be stored on your computer. When logging in manually, pay attention to the page with the security question, as this page may prompt you to identify your computer as Private (one that you use regularly) or Public (one that you will not use regularly). Select “Private,” so that the Web site knows to place the cookie on your computer. If you set the option to “Public,” the cookie for this site will not be set correctly, and will continue to block the sign in process.
Once you have successfully signed in, sign out of the Web site. Create the account again using ID Vault.
If you are still unable to sign in to your financial account after setting cookies for your financial institution, check to see whether your login information is completed automatically, or “auto-filled” from previous visits:
- Make sure that any login information is not being “auto-filled” which could cause cookies to store incomplete information. If there is a check box on the site to save login information automatically, make sure that it is unchecked. For example, Bank of America has the “Save this Online ID” check box that must be unchecked when logging in manually so that cookies are saved correctly.

- Then delete the cookie for the site. To delete cookies, follow these steps:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click on “Tools” and choose “Internet Options”
- On “General” tab under “Browsing History,” click on “Delete”

- “Delete Browsing History” window will appear.
- Click on “Delete cookies...”
- Click on Close.
- Click on “Apply,” then “OK” to close out the Internet Options window.
- You must close this Internet Explorer window for the changes to take effect.
- Log in to the site manually.
- After you log in successfully (without additional security questions), log out. NOTE: If you have already added an account for this site in ID Vault, you must delete it.
- Add the account again using ID Vault.

17: What is my default browser? How can I change my default browser?
Most Windows-based computer systems have Internet Explorer set as the default browser. When you download and install Firefox, it will ask you if would like to make it your default browser.

If you answered “No,” and unchecked the “Always perform this check when starting Firefox” the browser will only open when you double-click it.
ID Vault will work with your default browser only. ID Vault supports Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher and Firefox 2 and higher browsers only.
To manually set Firefox as your default browser, follow the steps below:

- From the top menu, select Tools then Options.
- The “Options” window appears.
- Click on “Main” located at the top left corner of the “Options” window.

- Click on “Yes” to make Firefox your default browser.
- The Default Browser information box will disappear.
- Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the Options window.
- The Options window will close.
- Close the browser.
- Find an email with a link to a Web site or a Web page on your computer to test with. When you click the link in the email the Firefox browser will open. Likewise, if you open an HTML page that is stored on your computer it should open in the Firefox browser.
To manually designate Internet Explorer (IE) as your default browser, follow the steps below:
- In Internet Explorer click on Tools > Internet Options > Programs.
- If IE is the default browser, it will be indicated under the “Default web browser” section.
- If IE is not the default browser, you can click on “Make Default” to change your default web browser to IE.
- Click on “Apply” and “OK” to close the window.
- Close Internet Explorer to save the settings.
